Stilled Syntax
Collective narratives are never naturally formed. They depend on the continuous integration, correction, and shaping of individuals—requiring each person to surrender part of their own story, to be re-inscribed within a unified language and system of symbols that sustain the narrative’s continuity and legitimacy. What appear to be neutral, shared memories are in fact the result of layered selection. Power relations often remain hidden, not through coercion, but by quietly permeating the everyday: in the words we choose, in the gestures of our bodies, and in the very ways we gather.
In this project, I collect and integrate photographs of Chinese meeting scenes and arrangements found online, combining them with AI-generated 3D models and commercially available ones. By isolating and reconstructing these familiar, taken-for-granted visual details, I attempt to make visible the structures through which collective narratives are both embodied and maintained.
These spaces function like containers—holding and sustaining the narrative. Yet paradoxically, the individual can never fully withdraw from it: even in absence, the seat remains.
Only in the act of re-viewing can we begin to speak again of the “individual” — one that still bears its fractures and uncertainties.
